Bursting on the Cheap: AWS Launches New Low Cost Burstable EC2 Offering
The inherent advantage of the cloud deployment methodology is that it leverages elastic resources that can be consumed on-demand, through a self-service portal. There are two key ingredients to that formula which are the first two.
While as kids we feared stretching an elastic until it would burst, in the Amazon Web Services environment, we proudly push our resources this way.
While we talk about “cheap”, that does have to be viewed as a relative term. We could go on for hours about the pros and cons of the cloud versus on-premises depending on the organization and use-case. So, that aside, what does this new feature give us?
The new t2 instances have a baseline performance for the micro, small, and medium sizing which is 10%, 20$, and 40% respectively. Because of the lower baseline performance and burst capability, the monthly pricing comes in at $9.50 for t2.micro, $19.00 for t2.small, and an attractive $38.00 for the t2.medium.
This is a positive move for Amazon customers who can now leverage these lower consumption instances and then get the burst capability, which would of course bring you back up to the pricing of a full t1 instance.
You can read about the full offering over at the Amazon Web Services blog from their recent announcement.
