BYO…Key? Amazon S3 to Support Customer-Provided Keys
Have you ever heard the phrase “given the keys to the kingdom”? With all of the focus on encryption in the cloud storage world, it was with great joy that Amazon released an option to use customer provided keys to encrypt on their popular Simple Storage Service (S3).
Custom Keys = Customer Confidence
Supporting customer provided keys may seem like a small thing, but it is important that despite any of the assurances with protection at a cloud provider, that owning both sides of the key will be a powerful comfort to many organizations.
The code and management will be entirely on the Amazon side, but your keys will be the ones used to lock and unlock your data. As security gets heavier focus, this is a positive move by Amazon and we hope to see more of this customer enabling change ahead.
