Facebook Drives a Wedge Between Network Vendors
While network virtualization has been dominating the headlines lately, there is something that will definitely get some airtime among networking pundits in the coming weeks as Facebook launches its new whitebox networking gear nicknamed “Wedge”.
Facebook says “Your not the FBOSS of me!”
Along with the modular switch architecture that Facebook is developing in their Wedge product, the operating system that will run these devices is a linux derivative named FBOSS. Facebook has been involved in the Open Compute Project (www.opencompute.org) which touts open alternatives built by collaboration among vendors and community contributors. It is a very interesting concept that has been gaining lots of momentum.
The Wedge hardware is designed to be a ToR (Top of Rack) switch with modular design and internal redundancy. Powerfully equipped, and well thought out, this is definitely something that will draw interest from organizations and service providers.
