What Makes a Great Cloud Automation Tool?
When evaluating tools for automation, we typically look at them through the eyes of a systems administrator. It is important that we use a more broad set of criteria to evaluate an automation suite though, because more options are becoming available with similar technical specs. So, what is the differentiator?
Policy, Process, and Life-cycle Management
As more tools reach what we call “feature parity”, where the core capabilities are now level and the new top criteria move into the way that these tools can handle policy integration, process control and view, plus life-cycle management. We are seeing more of a full end-to-end picture as we build orchestration processes, so the tools are in need of matching up with those requirements.
Andi Mann wrote a great article here that gives a great top-down view of what the real requirements are for a top automation tool as we look at what we call cloud scale. This is a new level of process management that will be much sought after in the coming months and years.
