Making logging fun again! VMware releases Log Insight 2.0
Log management may not be fun, and it certainly isn’t anyone’s favorite thing to do for the most part. One thing that can ease the pain with log management is to use the VMware Log Insight tool which has a freshly released update with their 2.0 release.
The features that have been added include faster querying, quicker consumption of log content, extension into Microsoft platforms using a simple agent, and also a key feature of Intelligent Grouping. Using the grouping capability, logs with similar content will be consolidated to provide guidance on a potential central issue that may have multiple logs highlighting an issue.
A great example of using Log Insight was highlighted by Dan Wendlandt who leads the OpenStack group at VMware on a recent Cloudcast podcast (http://www.thecloudcast.net/2014/05/the-cloudcast-145-openstack-at-vmware.html). Dan was able to track issues inside an OpenStack environment using VMware Log Insight that found thousands of messages which were grouped together highlighting a DHCP issue in his demo lab.
As VMware expands its reach into partner platforms and guest environments, we will see more administrators getting the benefit of the long sought after centralized console. This is definitely a sign of good things to come.
