Platform9: Out of Stealth, Into Your Private Cloud
Today is a big day for Platform9, a new startup which just came out of stealth to announce their exciting new private cloud provisioning platform. There are lots of waves in the market around the public versus the private cloud, and it is because of the significant presence of both sides of the equation.
Private Cloud is Enterprise Ready
Many enterprise organizations are embracing private cloud. That is a fact. It isn’t that they are shying away from public cloud, but they are either heavily invested in on-premises virtualization, or looking towards hybrid deployments to get the best of both worlds.
One of the barriers for many to making the jump from traditional virtualization models into private cloud, is the challenge of building out the self-service features and associated service catalogs. There are tools out there which can do this, but the integration efforts can be significant.
Who are Platform9?
The four co-founders of Platform9 include some serious players who have come to Platform9 with a strong history inside VMware as well as other companies.
Based on OpenStack, Building for Docker and VMware
Platform9 is being touted as AWS style rapid provisioning for your private cloud. With their launch today, they support OpenStack environments, and next on the roadmap is the continued growth and integration to include Docker and VMware.
Agility in provisioning and management will be the next wave to enable companies to really advance their IT platforms. True integration with business processes will be where the win comes. Remember that every cloud is driven only by its customers who consume the services. Creating the most usable environment is done by tightly integrating real use-cases into your service catalog.
Platform9 is interesting because they use the strengths of OpenStack in conjunction with a proprietary platform that is designed to integrate and be able to be deployed in minutes. Yes, minutes. Once you have your Platform9 cloud configuration, deploying agents is simple and your hyeprvisors will be almost instantly become available to your Platform9 management portal.
