SAP Skies are Looking Blue…Azure Blue
Long gone are the days where big software companies hold their bare-metal delivery methods close to their chest. We have seen the shift with products from Oracle getting the “supported” moniker on virtualized platforms, so it was both a surprise and not a surprise at the same time to see that SAP is partnering with Microsoft on delivering SAP solutions using Microsoft Azure.
Cloudy Forecast for SAP Customers – Which is Good!
This very positive move by SAP to empower its customers, and potential customers, to extend their use of Microsoft Azure, or to use it as a deployment strategy to try out SAP. Lightening the burden to deploy large infrastructure platforms to test out SAP could be one of the most positive steps by the company to increase early adoption. Beyond that, the ability to design your SAP infrastructure to scale into Azure for growth on-demand is an operational match made in heaven.
* Some Assembly Required
One thing to note is that the SAP solutions for Microsoft Azure are not pre-packaged VM images that you simply use a one-click installer for. Because of the SAP deployment model, this is really just a new platform to build your SAP infrastructure into. That being said, SAP implementation teams will be smiling widely with this new option available to them.
