The Cloud is Not Perfect: Microsoft Exchange Online Suffers Big Outage
In a world where we are striving for the elusive Five 9 (99.999%) uptime, the idea of a 9 hour outage to a cloud service provider is something that doesn’t sit well with many people. Imagine how Microsoft feels as it stares into the face of a sea of root cause analysis work and thousands of angry emails from customers of their leading Exchange Online system.
Isn’t the Cloud Always On?
This is a hard lesson in the concept that even the best architected systems can still suffer outages due to a number of unforeseen circumstances. The lesson is that we may still see issues despite every protection put into place on cloud environments.
In the past, even cloud hosting juggernaut Amazon Web Services has had entire regions become unavailable, but in the end customers found out that the Service Level Agreement just means that they will get a discount for the outage.
You can read about the outage here at PCWorld.com as there is a rather distinct absence of a blog at the Microsoft site which is rather unfortunate. Let’s hope that they have some updates for us soon.
